GUNS TO THE GOSPEL-HIGH WYCOMBE 01/29/09
The first church that we pioneered in England was in the city of High Wycombe Buckinghamshire, It was here that I had met Sister Hilda Allen and her family. Hilda had a son and a daughter by the name of Larry and Kim. Brother Charles Price had taken me to their home about a year before we finally arrived in the UK after our tour of raising partners in missions. I can say this without hesitation. Sister Hilda was a real blessing and inspiration to me and our family. She was a real prayer warrior who had works to go along with her faith. Much of my success in the British Isles could be attributed to Sister Allen and her family. When we first got started in High Wycombe we were able to gain the children that Brother and Sister Roy Lindo from the church Calvary Temple in London had coming to a Sunday School that they held in the Irish Men’s club. Some of the kids that he had attending would later grow up and become members of good standing in the church. Some of these were Sandra and Bernadine who was sisters. Also was another young Lady by the name of Sonia. All of these girls were beautiful young people that received the Holy Ghost and went on to continue living for God from the Sunday School meetings. It was in the club that we started having our first services. The Irish club would use the building on Sunday till around 1:00 P.M. We would go in around 2:00 to have our meetings. Many times we would arrive and the room we used was reeking with the smell of beer, alcohol, and cigarettes. Immediately after starting our meetings there I began to look for another building for our services. On Wednesday night the Allen family and all of us would get together in our home and have bible study. We also were able to rent the Guild hall in the center of downtown High Wycombe. On Saturday night we would open the hall up with games, coffee, and tea. We would also go out and hand out tracts inviting people to come to the meetings. It was here that Brother Martin started coming to the meetings. He had the longest hair that I had ever seen on a man, but he also had one of the nicest spirits. I tried to never tell brother Martin that he neeeded to cut his hair but he started coming to our wednesday night meetings and one night in the bible study we all were taking turns reading scripture and when it came time for him to read his portion of scripture it was taken from 1 Cor. 11:13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. None of us said anything to him. I was accused of setting the reading up and allowing him to be able to read that particular portion, but I am sure you know me and that well I better not go any further. On Saturday night at the guild hall meeting Brother Martin came in and had a big grin on his face. He walked up to me and said Pastor Duke do you notice anything different about me? I looked at him and said No! He said look again. I did and said no again. Then he said look at my hair, I cut it. Well I looked and lo and behold he had cut it. Where it had been down his back it was not at his shoulders. I smiled and let Brother Martin know I was really proud of him. Well for weeks we kept praying for him to get the baptism of the Holy Ghost and it always appeared that when he would be close to getting it he would stop. He came to ma and asked me for advice. I said Brother Martin when you get the Holy Ghost the Spirit will come on you and you will weep and cry before the Lord. He looked in my eyes and said Pastor Duke I have never cried. I have always been taught never to cry or show remorse as this is a sign of weakness. I told him Brother Martin when you get the Baptism you will cry. A few months later we loaded up our van to travel to Austria for a church conferance. Brother Miller and family ourselves, and Brother Price and Brother Martin. We finally arrived in Vienna and on the first night of the conferance Brother Martin was sitting next to me when all of a sudden he started tapping me on the shoulder. I glanced over to him and he was pointing to his eyes. They were full of tears. I said did you get the Holy Ghost yet? He put his arms up in the air began praying and started speaking in tongues as the Spirit of God gave the utterance. It was like God had waited till he was allowed to break up his fallow ground with tears from the Spirit of remorse. Well we had a great conferance, we met people from all over Europe at the conferance and even were able to see people from behind the iron curtain get to be there. I do not know how they were able to get visas to travel outside their country but they were there praising the Lord with all their hearts. I was told later that they were not able to worship like this as they had to have secret meetings in their homes and not be discovered by the authorities. Well at the end of a great time in Vienna we loaded up the van and made our way back to England to continue in the work of God there.
Later on after returning from Vienna I was able to finally rent the downstairs hall at the Townfield House from the Conservative club and we began holding meetings there until about a year later when the United Reform Church rented us their premises. During our meetings in the Townfield House we saw God move in a mighty way filling many people with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. During some of these powerful meetings the conservative club would sometimes have something going on in their bar upstairs and I know we must have upset them because sometimes they would bang on the floor or roll barrels on the floor to make noise to upset our meetings.
One of the men that came into the church while we were at the Townfield House was a Salvation Army Lieutenant by the name of Billy Graham. The whole family of the Graham’s were filled with the Holy Ghost Baptism and when I asked Billy about being Baptized in Jesus Name he said he would like to discuss the matter with me. Well he and his wife came over to our home and he pulled out a clip board where he had wrote down many questions regarding the Baptism in the name of Jesus. I answered all his questions and he then looked at me and said me and my family would like for you to baptize us in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of our sins. I had built a portable baptism tank and we filled it up and all of the family went down in the water in the name of Jesus.
Brother Billy went on to become a minister of the truth. I would tell people later that I had baptized Billy Graham in Jesus name. They would look at me in awe until I explained he was not the one they were thinking of.
Another young man that became a great inspiration to me was Michael Joules. Mike was a lay preacher in the Methodist Church. Mike would attend his church services and then would come to ours. One Sunday I saw him ministering at the Methodist Chapel across from our home in Radnage and about a week later I was baptizing him in the fiberglass tank in Jesus name. I almost gave up on Mike receiving the Holy Ghost. He was so quite. But he kept on coming and one night we had a meeting in Reading and there God filled him with the Holy Ghost. Later Brother Mike told me it was easy to receive. I told him I wish he had felt that way a long time ago.
Our church began to build up and finally we moved into the United Reform Church’s building. It was here that God began to really add to the church. We were across from the park named “The Rye” and it was in this park where we would put up a tent yearly and have a tent crusade. We had some great men of God to come over and preach for us there. Among them were Johnny Godair, Don Johnson, Brother Morgan along with David and the Giants, and many others that came from the United States churches to help us with these meetings. The tent would hold around 175 people and it was filled during most of our crusades. Many received the Holy Ghost in these meetings. We had a great church going that was a great mixture of West Indians, a few English, a few Americans, and a few Africans. I really believ that I had some of the finest people from all ethnic groups. I was really proud of all of them. I use to think now I can really sing Jesus loves the little children of the world, red and yellow black and white they are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the children of the world. I had sung that song in my Baptist Church in Alabama but we only had white kids coming to the church. Now I had seen children from all walks of life that were coming to a church that welcomed them all. I remember what Jesus had spoken through the Apostle Paul in Collosians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
At the guild hall meetings we saw many things happen there that could shock someone if they had not seen it happen before. We had a young man to start coming to the meetings and he was posessed by an evil spirit. One night we had a tremendous servive in the guild hall and at the end of the meeting he came up and when we began to pray for him he began to act wild. About the time we were praying for the Spirit to release him his dad walked in. The next thing that I witnessed was the two growling and snarling at one another like two mad dogs. We prayed and prayed till they calmed down and finally saw some deliverance.
There were many occasions where we came in contact with people that were posesssed. One night in Radnage Brother Price came to vist us with a young man from Barnsley near Sheffield England. Before they got ready to leave I asked them if they would like to pray. Well when we began to pray Brother Allan went off his rocker. He began screaming, fighting, and saying words that were not very Christian. We instantly understood that he was possessed. I remember when it first started I loked at Pastor Price and he said well he got the Holy Ghost in our meeting in London jsut before we came over here. Well after a lot of prayer over Allan suddenly the Devil came out of him and he spat up all kind of bile on the floor. We had a small dog and before we knew it the dog ran over and lapped up the bile. It akmost made all of ill but later on we would tell the story and tell people that the dog ate the devil up that came out of Allan.
Satan did not like what he saw happening in High Wycombe so he raised up his ugly head and began to work among some of the young people in the church. As we had now a lot of West Indians in the church but few English people I suggested to our church maybe we needed to do something to reach more English people. I had seen where it was very hard for us to get English people to come to the services and suggested even having a special meeting designed to what I felt they might accept. The Charismatic churches were reaching them and they were lively meetings but not as boisterous as ours. Well the devil started working through a young girl that we had cast a demon out of and some of the other young girls began to listen to her and the next thing I knew was we had a problem. I remember when she started coming to the meetings that one Saturday we had a special meeting in the Guild hall. That night the place was filled with unsaved visitors. Well the demon began to act up in her because of the danger of casting it out with so many sinners there I commanded it to be calm. She was screaming and writhing all over the place with her eyes all out of focus. When I commanded it to be calm I looked at her eyes which was rolling around like a roulette and suddenly she stopped screaming and like the wheels on a slot machine they came back into focus. In the following meeting in the church she was delivered from the evil spirit. After she got in the church her dad who looked like Goliath came in one Sunday and caused a uproar. He was mad and wanted to get the preacher. Well the preacher he wanted was me and I happened to not be there that night. They finally got him calmed down and escorted him out the building. Well the young girl must not have stayed free from her spirit because some time later she began to spread that I was a racist. She convinced some of the other young people of this and they tried to get me in trouble with the district. It created a bad spirit in the church and I had to end my desire to use them to reach and hold a special service for the English. I wonder where they will stand in the judgemet of Christ? Will many of the English people's blood be on their hands? I hope that if they ever read this story that they might realize what they did to hinder the saving of souls. Some of these young people were so precious and sung in the choir. They would come to our home and practice. We were shocked that one person could be used by the enemy to defeat the progress of God and his purpose for us in the church. It left me really heartbroken that a Christian could be blaming someone else as a racist while it was they that was so prejudiced. I had noticed that after we had gotten many in from different areas of the world that there was prejudice among the people from Granada and the people of Jamaica as well as the West Indians that did not like the Africans. I can truthfully say that I loved them all. How could I do that? One that had been raised to dislike and hate people from other races. Well Jesus had came into my life and that should make a change in our lives. We should go from hate to Love.
As the years went by the day finally came for me to go home on furlough. An appointed missionarty in the U.P.C. was appointed for 4 years and was allowed to return home to obtain reappointment and to travel to raise more P.I.M.s as many had been lost over thge years and because of inflation he would have to raise additional money in P.I.M.s to cover the rising cost of his appointment.
Well I did not know what we would be able to do with the church in High Wycombe. I started to pray for God to send someone to take charge while I was away. I remember God answering my prayer. One day Brother Arlo Mohlanpah walked into the church and after the service he informed me that he was going to be living in the UK for a couple of years and that he was looking for a place to attend church. He was a Minister in our organization and after speaking with him for awhile I knew that God had answered my prayer. Brother Mohlanpah was a great bible teacher as I soon found out. I had always been a pioneer evangelistic type of a minister and felt like I got by in teaching but had never felt like I was a excellant Bible Teacher. When I listened to Brother Mohlantah teach I felt like this was a double blessing for the church in High Wycombe. I beleived that he would enrich the church in bible knowledge while he took care of the church while I was away.
My family and I left High Wycombe and returned to the USA. We spent a year travelling and at the end of the deputation trail we finally arrived bcak in England to resume Pastoring the church in High Wycombe. There was some new american families in the church when we returned. The Stakley family had come over to the UK to launch a new bakery that would supply buns and bakery goods for the new McDonads that now were being opened throughout the UK. They had also another family with them and it looked like the church had been really blessed while we had been gone. The people appeared to also have learned a lot from the teaching ministry of Brother Mohlanpah. It did not take me long to realize that truly God had sent this family for such a time as this.
