It awoke me with a start and I answered it and a man began asking me if I was the Pastor. I told him I was and he began telling me that he needed my help and wanted me to come right away to his home in Newport. He sounded desperate and so I got his address and told him I would be there as soon as possible, Carol had awakened by now by all the noise and she asked me who it was . I told her I did not know but he wanted me to come over to his home right away as he needed me to help him with a bad problem he had. I asked Carol if she wanted to go with me and she gently declined by saying No. I got out of bed and dressed and was soon on my way to Newport. As I entered the area where the address he gave me was I began to think that it was a hoax as the houses in the area was all derelict and empty. But as I came to the number of the house he had given me I noticed that someone did live in it. I got out of the car then walked up to the door and rang the doorbell. Well I tried to ring the doorbell but there wasn’t one. It was missing. I knocked on the door and when I did I heard a group of dogs rush the door barking and snarling. Now I am scared to death of dogs. I don’t know why but have always had a fear of them. I gritted my teeth though and stood at the door and finally a man opened the door. I told him I was Pastor Duke and he ran the dogs off and asked me to come in. As I entered the door a foul odor hit me. The aroma was not all that pleasing, I think you would have used the word stink. He escorted me to a room and told me to sit down. I looked around and all the chairs I saw had no seat in them. I tried to decide which one was the safest to try and sit in, I finally chose on nearest the door and sit in it expanding my cheeks as much as possible where I would not slip down on the floor. He sit down across from me and as he sit down all of his dogs ran and set beside him staring at me with their teeth kinda curled. All of a sudden he said I am demon possessed. The reason I called you was that I want you to cast the demons out of me. I asked him how he knew he was demon possessed and he told me that he had seen a movie about demon possession and realized that was his problem. As he spoke to me he would rant and rave and even growl like a dog. After listening to him I told him I would lay hands on him and pray for him. As I began to approach him to lay my hands on him the dogs went mad barking and snarling at me. Quickly I decided the laying on of hands was out. So I bowed my head and began to pray for him. As I prayed he started ranting and snarling so I finished my prayer kind of abruptly and looked at him and told him, I really berleive you have a bad case. I would like for you to come to the meeting this Sunday and all of the church will gather around you and pray for your deliverance. I said I will see you Sunday and inched myself out the door finally reaching the front door safely with the dogs slowly following me. When I finally reached the car I breathed a sigh of relief thanking God for his deliverance. Mine ! I found out later that he was a son of the McIntosh family and that they lived with him and were upstairs asleep when I came. Tragically I never saw the man again. One day I had to attend a board meeting with the district when we found out from Supt. Mervyn Miller that they had received a letter from a man in Lydney about 8 miles from where I lived that had a church building he would give to the organization if we would start having services in it. Bro Miller asked me if I was interested and I said yes. He arranged for us to meet the retired Minister who had made the offer. Representatives from the Board met with him in Lydney. His name was Reverend Price. During our tour of the premises Rev Price informed us that he would not outright give us the church but would give us a 3 year free lease with an option to renew it at the end of the three years. The building was a nice little church building around 75 years of age or more. It was located in the center of Lydney next to a small river. Well we took him up on his offer and it was not long after that we began to have services there. I closed up our meeting in Newport and we would pick up the few people there and transport them to Lydney for the meetings. We built up to around 45-50 people and had great meetings there. One of the families that came in during this time was the Diamond family. They were from the forest of Dean and the family fell in love with the services. They had a daughter by the name of Helen that really took to our family. Helen and my daughter’s and son became the best of friends. Helen received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and I baptized her in Jesus name along with her sister Ruth. Helen and Ruth became like daughters to Carol and me. She seemed like she loved the truth that we preached and would eventually help us in starting other works in the area, later helping in the work in Oxford. We stayed with the work for three years in Lydney until the lease expired and Pastor Price reneged on his agreement to renew our lease. Later on I found out that he had gone around bragging about casting the heretics out of the building. After letting us use the building he began to take a stand against our doctrine of Baptism in Jesus name and the oneness of the Godhead. To this day I have never understood how people can say they Jesus then deny his name in water Baptism when the scriptures plainly let us know that the early church only knew baptism in Jesus name. Acts2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. During the three years we saw a lot of people come to know God there in the power of his Holy Spirit. After closing the meetings in Lydney we moved to Cheltenham and had meetings in the quaker hall for a few months until we heard that Billy Graham had started preaching a false doctrine. The church board had him in and during the meeting with the board he abruptly got up pulled out his ministers card and resigned. As a result I had to go back and take care of the church in High Wycombe. It was during this time that God gave me a real burden to start a church in Oxford. I had a good group of people in High Wycombe and I spoke to Brother Fred Plumb and Brother Mogg if they would like to help me get the work going in Oxford. They quickly agreed to work with me and we began to look for a place to have worship services in. ![]()
